Cambodia's history is characterized by a fascinating diversity and an eventful past. From the impressive Angkor Empire to the dark Khmer Rouge era to current developments, the country offers a rich treasure trove of historical events and cultural influences.
Cambodia – A country with a history and present that could hardly be more diverse. Many in the West may have vague ideas about this country, be it the impressive jungle temple of Angkor Wat or the painful memory of the brutal Khmer Rouge rule under Pol Pot in the 1970s that left millions dead.

Today, more than 40 years after the end of the reign of terror, Cambodia has a wealth of experiences to offer travelers that go far beyond clichés. Picturesque landscapes, cultural highlights such as the impressive Angkor temple complex, lively cities and paradisiacal beaches along the Gulf of Thailand are waiting to be discovered.

While our visits showed us the glamorous side of the country, we also quickly became aware that Cambodia is struggling with serious social and economic problems. Despite progress since the late 1990s after a turbulent history, the country still suffers from major challenges:
Health care is inadequate, state structures often appear opaque and corrupt, the distribution of wealth is extremely unequal and access to education depends heavily on the social situation of the parents. Although Cambodia has experienced impressive development in recent years, it is still one of the poorest nations in Asia.
